What is FIPS 140-3? 

FIPS 140-3 (Federal Information Processing Standard Publication 140-3) is the current U.S. government standard for defining security requirements for cryptographic modules. It succeeds FIPS 140-2 with updates that reflect both modern cryptographic practices and international standards. 

While FIPS 140-2 centered on algorithm validation and implementation, FIPS 140-3 aligns with ISO/IEC 19790:2012 and ISO/IEC 24759:2017, expands testing to address side-channel and non-invasive attacks, and raises the bar for how cryptographic components are evaluated. 

For federal agencies and contractors handling sensitive but unclassified information, FIPS 140-3 compliance provides assurance. It confirms that the cryptographic tools in use have been tested and validated to meet the strictest security requirements set by law and policy.
