How to Backup Google Cloud SQL – HYCU Briefing Note

Each of the major cloud providers, Amazon, Google and Azure, provide SQL as a service. While these providers offer data protection, that protection is more for high availability (HA) rather than backup. Most cloud providers leverage replication to protect against media failure and server failure but they lack backup. Backup provides an air-gapped copy of data, longer-term retention on a secondary and less expensive storage tier. While cloud administrators can cobble together a workaround, these approaches often use custom scripts and are manually executed and maintained. Organizations need integrated tools that provision as easily as the cloud based SQL solutions they are using to protect their data and provide an air-gapped, long-term copy of data. For users of Google’s Cloud SQL, HYCU software has extended its HYCU Backup as a Service for Google Cloud Platform to include support for Google Cloud SQL. Customer’s running Cloud SQL can now deploy an integrated backup and recovery solution with a single click. Users subscribe to HYCU through the Google Cloud Platform (GCP) Marketplace using their native Google Cloud credentials. There are no agents to install and there is no overhead on existing operations. The addition of support for Google Cloud SQL means that the customers’ Cloud SQL instances and databases are automatically discovered. Once discovered, those instances are automatically protected by HYCU with a single click. The solution provides granular recovery of databases and it also provides automation for the creation of additional copies so organizations can develop and test on non-production copies. As HYCU did with their Nutanix solution, HYCU Backup as a Service for Google Cloud Platform was built specifically for Google Cloud. Users will work with the same user interface and there is no additional training required.

StorageSwiss Take

Data protection and backup in particular is a very crowded market. HYCU, although young, has successfully differentiated itself by creating backup solutions purpose-built for specific platforms, first with Nutanix and now with Google Cloud Platform. With each platform, after they achieve initial support, they then extend the solution to protect more of its components. They also leverage existing APIs and technologies instead of re-writing those capabilities. The result is data protection solutions that look like they should on their respective platform. The HYCU solution provides the Google Compute Platform with a true differentiator when compared to their cloud competitors.
